The Franklin High School
Concert Band meets during
Second Period in the Spring Semester. Students that
participate in the Concert Band prepare music based on the
Grade III, IV, and V Concert Band Literature List for the
State of North Carolina. The band then
travels to the State Band Contest in late March to perform
their pieces for three judges based on a statewide
adjudication sheet. After their stage performance, the band
relocates to another area "backstage" where they receive
a piece of music that they have never seen nor performed before.
Here, in the "sight-reading room,"
they study the music for five minutes under
Mr. Huckabee's direction and
then play the music from start to finish without stopping.
A single judge then gives the band a sight-reading score,
and the band has completed their contest day.
After returning from the state contest, the band will begin
to prepare for their fun-filled Spring Concert along with the
Franklin HIgh School Jazz Ensemble.
This concert is held a few weeks before finals begin, and is
meant to consist of music for fun and entertainment. Most of
the music is of a more contemporary pop or rock style rather
than classical, and helps contribute to an end to a long and
tiresome semester. The Spring Concert is also known as the
"Senior Dedication" show, where all band seniors are recognized.
