Music Appreciation II
Spring Semester 2008
Mr. Buddy D. Huckabee - Teacher
Mr. Kyle Maples – Student
Teacher
Goals /
Objectives: To learn the basics of music composition
and various historical concepts. We
will focus on several aspects throughout the semester, including: history, rhythmic dictation, tonalities,
genres / styles of music, chord structures, basic notation, as well as compose
various pieces of music for individual and class presentation. History study will be limited on
composition context, but will include listening to styles from the Middle Ages,
Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 19th Century Eras, extending to
contemporary musical study and imitating this aspect in composition
projects. In the closing weeks of
class, students will experiment with writing their own composition projects and
may perform these for the class for extra credit. A Notebook/Journal will be kept
and will be considered 30% of the final Grade each 6 weeks. Bi-daily Journal entries will be assigned
on a regular basis, and every student will have the first 15 minutes of class to
begin their entries. Incomplete
entries should be completed outside of class, and random checks for a grade may
be used at any time. All musical
examples brought in to class (by students) MUST be edited for content / explicit
lyrics. Any student that breaks this
rule will be disciplined through the teacher, administration, and parents.
Missed work, syllabus
copies, homework assignments, etc. will be made available on the band website
at: www.smnet.net/fhsband

* Composition Assignment is 30%
of your FINAL SEMESTER grade.
Guidelines for your
composition will be given later in the semester.
Projects: Random composition projects will be
given. These projects are to help
the students become more aware of the history of composers obtained through the
internet and various content study. Using this history, students will
compose assignments based on the study of that time period. All students are responsible for their
computers, and are expected to take care of the equipment in the computer lab,
as well as the classroom at all times.
Students are also held responsible for any websites that are considered
inappropriate, and will be held accountable.
Final Exam: Any student that does not obtain at
least a “C” average throughout the semester will be expected to take the final
exam. All student with a “C” or better will be exempt. Those students exempt from the final
exam will receive an automatic grade of 100 for the final exam grade. Students expected to take the final exam
need to understand that this grade will be 30% of the TOTAL FINAL average for
the class ( ˝ composition project, ˝ final
exam).
Homework / Classwork / Group Work / Quizzes : At times, students may
have homework, classwork, quizzes, or group work
assignments. Students will be given
homework / classwork grades as individual grades. Group work grades are given in pairs. One grade for the entire group project, and one grade as an individual grade for effort and
participation. Quizzes are given as
individual grades.
Make-up Work /
Tests:
Students that are absent for any reason, and miss a grade, will have 3 full
school days to make up the work upon return to school. Any work not made up will be given a
grade of 0. Students that miss a
Unit or Chapter test will be given 2 school days to make up the test. After the two days, the student may NOT make up the work. All long term assignments/projects must
be turned in the first day the student returns to school for full credit. Afterwards, 20 points will be deducted
until complete.
Use of School
Equipment: Students are aware that class is held in
the band room. At random times,
students may be involved with instruments and equipment that may belong to the
Franklin Band Program. Students are
to stay away from all equipment except for days and
times you are working with the equipment. Any student in violation of this rule
will be taken to an administrator / principal.
Tardy Policy / Food
Policy: NO FOOD or DRINK of ANY kind is allowed
in the Franklin Fine Arts
Center. Failure to comply
will result in detentions, parent calls, as well as a “Clean-up the FAC
Saturday” where students will be expected to clean both levels of the
Listening Days – (Called
on Most Fridays / except for test days)
The purpose of Listening
days is for the class to express their love of different types of music, and to
show their ideas/favorites to the class (thus, called MUSIC APPRECIATION J). The teacher will not tolerate any
explicit lyrics stemming from listening days, or the class will lose its
privileges of listening day. Most
listening days will be used on Fridays, unless a test is used. A test will preside over listening
day. When all tests are completed
and turned in, listening day can begin after testing. On listening days, students will turn in
a listening day worksheet for a daily grade, excluding test days when no
paperwork will be used. Should the
class not use listening day to their advantage, and use it as a waste of time,
it will be terminated.
What you need to
begin:
*One Subject Notebook= Be sure to get a one subject
notebook for this class. These will be taken up randomly (journal grades) and given back to
you. Journals will be turned
in for a final journal grade at the end of the semester.
*Folder
= A folder of some type
should be purchased to keep up with your handouts for daily lessons. This folder should only contain the
worksheets, etc. for music appreciation.
At the end of each grading period, you will be instructed as to when you
are able to remove the contents of the folder to use new materials.
There is no textbook yet for this class, so your materials you need for
class will be kept in the folder that you choose. It is your responsibility to keep up
with the loose materials for class.
(Some of the tests may be open book)J
At certain times, we will
study things outside the regular course outline. These will also be utilized for the
tests unless stated differently.
All work will also be made
available to you via the band website.
