Configuring your System for SMnet

Windows 95 - 98
- Double click on My Computer.
- Double click on Dial Up Networking
- Double click Make New Connection
- Type SMNET in box that says "Type a name for the computer you are dialing"
- Click on NEXT
- The phone number for the computer you want to call is:

- Sylva - 631-9966
- Cherokee - 497-5087
- Click on NEXT
- Click on FINISH
- RIGHT click on the new icon "SMNET" and select "PROPERTIES". Click on the tab that says "SERVER TYPES" and make sure that "ENABLE SOFTWARE COMPRESSION" and "TCP/IP" are the only two things checked.
- Click on the button that says "TCP/IP SETTINGS". Make sure that "SERVER ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS" is checked and that "SERVER ASSIGNED NAMED SERVER ADDRESSES" is checked.
- Click on OK then OK again.
- RIGHT click on the new icon "SMNET" and select "Create Shortcut". You will get a message stating "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Click on YES, then close the open windows.
Windows XP
- Click Start, Click Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, and then click "Create a new connection" in the left pane.
- Click "Set up my connection manually", click Next, click "Connect using a Dial Up Modem", and then click Next.
- Type "SMNET", click Next.
- The Dial-Up phone number for the computer that you are dialing is listed above. Enter the phone number but do not enter an area code. Click Next.
- Choose whether you want this connection to be shared by all users of this computer (Anyone's use), or only for yourself (My use only). Click Next.
- Type your logon information (the dial-up username and password listed above). Uncheck the box that reads- "Turn on the Internet Firewall Connection for this computer".
- Click Next. Check the box to add a shortcut to the desktop.
We recommend you always use the SMNET icon on your desktop to connect to SMNET. The first time you double click this icon a "Connect To" box will appear. Type your SMNET USERNAME and PASSWORD in the respective boxes, select "Save Password" then click on connect. Your computer will dial into SMNET and then when you are connected you will be able to surf the ‘Net.
